14:45 – 15:05

Dr. Daria Tataj

Governing Board/Executive Committee, EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology

Professor/Researcher, Warsaw University of Technology Business School, Poland

HOW CAN the EIT - EUROPEAN INSTITUTE of INNOVATION and TECHNOLOGY - SUPPORT RESEARCH, INNOVATION and SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH in EUROPE?

The mission of the EIT is to be a catalyst for a step change in Europe's innovation capacity and innovation impact. This means both an impact on the economy as well as on society at large.

The EIT will do so through the delivery of major new actions, the first one being the establishment of the EIT Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs). The main goals implemented through the KICs are to build innovative 'webs of excellence' through the integration of higher education, research, business and entrepreneurship and the effective interaction between those partners; to create new business both for existing industry but also for new endeavours; and to educate and develop entrepreneurial people that are able to work across stakeholder boundaries.

These goals are ambitious; since they will require nothing less than a change in mindset in the way we work together. At the same time, we believe very much that they are achievable - and urgently necessary for the European innovation landscape if we don't want to wake up as the laggards of the 21st century.

15:05 – 15:25

Professor of Industry and Innovation Studies Slavo Radosevic

Director of School of Slavonic and East European Studies - University College of London - University of London, the UK;

SCIENCE - INDUSTRY LINKS in CEE : CONVENTIONAL POLICY WISDOMS FACING REALITY

Presentation analyzes factors behind a widespread policy failure to support
science - industry linkages in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) . It will be explained this failure as being largely due to uncritical application of conventional policy wisdoms into the context of 'catching up' and 'laggard' economies. The argument is based on evidence of knowledge intensive enterprises in CEE and on analysis of innovation policies in CEECs. The conclusion is that support to science - industry linkages for the CEE should be balanced with support to strengthening 'actors' (existing large and small firms;
universities and public research organisations) and support to other
linkages in national innovation systems, especially knowledge links between
domestic and foreign firms.

BRAIN CIRCULATION: EUROPEAN POLICIES and INITIATIVES for EFFECTIVE and BALANCED MOBILITY of RESEARCHERS

The competition for talents is fierce in research world, not only among countries and regions, but also between research and other economic sectors. We also have to face the issue of an ageing research population and a situation where young people are not attracted into the research profession. With this increasing Global competition for researchers, the shortage of qualified Human resources is a concern for Europe. But at the same time, it is essential that the mobility of European research is promoted and encouraged. This intervention drives the concept that if a successful balance between promoting mobility and improving researchers’ careers is established, it is possible to reach true and effective Brain Circulation. The speaker will showcase the main European policy initiatives and implementation measures towards better careers and more mobility for researchers.
